Associate Professor Lin Tung-Yi from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Institute at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) has emerged as a trailblazer in the field of herbal medicine research. Recruited as a special talent by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2018, and supported by the Einstein Cultivation Program, Lin has been steadfast in his pursuit of extracting and developing herbal medicines.
Professor Lin Tung-Yi is dedicated to researching the extraction and development of herbal medicines for application in cancer treatment and immune regulation.
His focus on exploring novel strategies for cancer treatment and immune regulation reflects a commitment to applying research and development findings in medical strategies, with the ultimate goal of providing new options for patients.
In response to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Lin Tung-Yi and his research team redirected their focus to traditional Chinese medicine. They validated the preventive effects of the “Qing Guan Formula,” a traditional Chinese medicine compound, against viral infections. Additionally, they developed the “Ganoderma microsporum protein-GMI,” derived from a specific lingzhi (ganoderma lucidum) mushroom, as a potential preventive measure for COVID-19. The research outcomes are poised for publication in esteemed international journals, underscoring the developmental potential of traditional Chinese herbal medicine globally.
The year 2022 marked a significant milestone as Professor Lin led his team to participate in the “Archimedes International Invention Competition,” where they secured the gold medal among 600 competing inventions. This success spurred the team to compete in various international invention competitions across seven countries, earning gold medals in each. Lin Tung-Yi’s outstanding contributions earned him the esteemed 2022 18th Annual International Outstanding Inventor of the Year Gold Sphere Award.
In 2023, Lin continued his groundbreaking research, focusing on cancer treatment strategies utilizing “Ganoderma lucidum mycelium protein-GMI” and “Trametes versicolor sulfated polysaccharide.” Through rigorous cell experiments and animal models, the team demonstrated the inhibitory effects of Ganoderma lucidum mycelium protein on lung cancer cell growth and metastasis, enhancing the effectiveness of clinical medications. Simultaneously, Trametes versicolor sulfated polysaccharide exhibited potential in inhibiting cancer cell growth through macrophage-mediated immune responses.
These research findings were presented in prestigious international invention competitions, including the “Korea WiC World Innovation Invention Competition,” the “USA AII Da Vinci International Invention Competition,” the “Europe Cyprus International Invention Competition,” and the “Domestic IIIC International Innovation Invention Competition.” The team’s consistent success, marked by numerous gold medals and special awards, positions them as frequent winners of international invention accolades.
Lin Tung-Yi’s leadership and the team’s achievements not only garner international recognition for the potential of traditional Chinese herbal medicine but also elevate its visibility on the global stage and highlight the research capacity of the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. Furthermore, this success enhances the perceived value of traditional Chinese herbal medicine in clinical applications, marking a significant contribution to the field.
