National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University will hold a School and Department Expo on February 24th, where the newly established School of Chinese Medicine will make its debut. The new school aims to introduce high school students to the idea that Chinese medicine not only encompasses traditional practices but also integrates AI and information technology for interdisciplinary learning.
In a press release today, the university highlighted the need for more research capacity and faculty in traditional Chinese Medicine in Taiwan. In response to this, the former Yang Ming Medical College (now part of NYCU) established the Institute of Traditional Medicine in 1991. After years of groundwork in the field of Chinese medicine, the university received approval from the Ministry of Education last year to establish the School of Chinese Medicine. The Taipei Veterans General Hospital will serve as the primary teaching hospital, with the aim of training interdisciplinary “new Chinese medicine doctors.”
Tung-Yi Lin, the executive secretary of the School of Chinese Medicine and an associate professor at the Institute of Traditional Medicine, stated that the new school will integrate biotechnology, engineering, AI, information technology, and technology management into the training of next generation of Chinese Medicine professionals. Building on its long-standing experience in training top-tier medical students, NYCU will create a Chinese medicine education system within the national university framework. The training will be unique and different from traditional models, focusing on a hospital-based system with a strong interdisciplinary emphasis.
Currently, most Chinese medicine practitioners in Taiwan serve at the community level. NYCU pointed out that hospitals, universities, the government, and industry all urgently need Chinese medicine professionals to advance development of Chinese Medicine. The new school will focus on cultivating talent for clinical practice in hospitals, scientific research, and the biotech industry, thereby boosting the development of Taiwan’s Chinese medicine industry.
NYCU emphasized that the goal of the “new Chinese medicine doctors” is to invigorate large hospitals and the biotech industry. Beyond community practice, the school will provide students with broader academic perspectives and more diverse career opportunities. The university also plans to foster Chinese medicine professionals with a global outlook and innovative thinking through interdisciplinary collaboration, contributing to the advancement of medical technology.
